Race 6, Sunshine Coast, MCCAIN OPEN Handicap
Race 6 at Sunshine Coast on 9 August is the MCCAIN OPEN Handicap, 1000m on a Soft track. With a small field, the pace picture is decisive before the gates open. Thelwell maps to sit closer to the speed than most; how much pressure that generates over the short trip will shape what's left for the closers.
Wondereach ($3.15) is the market's narrow preference. The gap since last start is a point in favour: a fresher horse over 1000m on soft ground can come in ready to sprint. The question mark is the grade. This is Open company, and Wondereach is stepping up to face tougher opponents than recently. If the class holds, the price is firm and the case is real.
Thelwell ($4.10) sits second in the market, close enough to be live. Proximity to the pace is a genuine asset in a short-course race where the front positions count. Against that, the form line has been sliding, recent runs falling below earlier efforts. A horse on a downward curve needs everything to go right, and on soft ground over 1000m there is little room to recover if it doesn't.
Click Click Boom ($4.50) is the third runner with claims. The form is trending upward, which at least points the right way. The concern is identical to Wondereach's: Open grade is a step up, and a horse improving through softer fields has yet to prove it can match it here.
The race comes down to whether Wondereach's freshness and class translate at the top level, or whether Thelwell's track position and track pattern overpower it on the short run. A genuinely testing Soft track would favour horses travelling well within themselves. Watch for any late track-condition updates; the Sunshine Coast course can shift through a morning program.
